Has ANY reason been given as to WHY the DoD is cutting off this data distribution?

ALL Micro-Wave data (that 3 Hurricane models & forecasters utilize) are also going to be withheld from any distribution. (This is in addition to the arctic ice data)

Two possible reasons (please pardon my paranoia):

1. They don't want data posted that supports global warming conclusions or that discredits climate change denialism.

2. With a possible resource legal or even military war looming for mineral rights on the polar seafloor, the govt doesn't want to release any sea ice data that may help potential competitors.

All possible. At the moment, the Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) will keep the real-time monitoring going. The historical context will be more difficult for a while.
