Precipitation trending flat but falling as snow declining, seems to set up a feedback for Arctic waters warming. How far back does ERA5 data go I wonder.

ERA5 starts in 1940, but very very limited upper air data before the late 1940s and no satellite data until 1979, for precipitation it's tough. I pretty much don't use the 1940s output. 1950-79 seems okay for precipitation at scale but more problematic for subregions. All this based on my experience for Alaska/Arctic. I don't know if the pre-1979 precip is better at lower latitudes.
