Damn, damn, Damn. This is crazy. Where's the savings??? Why do they even bother? Thank God for Europe. Can you explain this to us -their possible motivations?

I don't have any inside information and was blindsided by this announcement.

It's just so sad.

Cruelty and ignorance is the only motivation for most of what is going on. Most everything with the word 'Climate' in it is either gone already or soon will be. Only a massive outcry could result in reinstating people - or products.

With the current crowd in power it would have to be truly massive and hardly anyone but a few of us are willing to protest lost datasets

I know.

I've been retired for over 10 years now - but have been fairly 'addicted' to following developments in the Arctic since the 1970's.

Another piece of truly insane news came out today:

"A militarized conspiracy theorist group believes radars are weather weapons’ and is trying to destroy them":

There was a paywall but I believe you. It is the age of conspiracy theories. I too have been tracking developments in both poles

I worry that warming is going ease access to whatever mineral resources are on the Arctic seafloor. May lead to some competition between nation states and even militarization up north.

There isn't a paywall on Cnn - but they may require to have any Ad Blocker at least temporarily turned off to view articles.

As an aside, I verify that NHC (just) lost one TAFB forecaster and one Tech - but they were not DOGE'd. (There has been some $$$ cutback for NOAA/AF storm missions and upgrades to GOES, however. My core forecasting has been Tropical Cyclones - so the loss of related data is quite discouraging.

I am so sorry to learn of this, Rick. It's hard to take in the implications of losing these programs, products, and people. Thanks for posting about this today.
