Update: Thanks to communications from a of couple of folks who have direct knowledge of the Kanuti Lake SCAN site in a professional capacity, I'll now say that we don't have any obvious reason to doubt the accuracy of the -64F. The site is in a known "cold hole" southeast of Allakaket, and the fact that it was -59F at the Allakaket airport FAA webcam (which is about 40 ft MSL above the Koyukuk river), certainly supports a temperature a temp of -64F at Kanuti Lake SCAN. I'll updated the map to include this.
Possible…but the SCAN sites often seem to report too low. Also, SCAN sites nationwide were pulled from the ACIS feed due to data quality problems.
Thanks. In this case, however this reading is the lowest temperature recorded in all of North America this January, surpassing the -51.5 C / -60.7 F recorded at Keg River, Alberta and Old Crow, Yukon Territory.
I see you didn’t find any new daily low records. Is the length of the extreme cold a different kind of record? It seems like it has been below -30 F every time I check on Fairbanks for more than a week.
Similar scenario but details differ: low aloft not as expansive and sea level pressures significantly higher. Temperatures aloft will not be quite as cold, so valley temps could well be lower than over the weekend but not quite so cold at elevation, so more of an inversion, though not large relative to “normal”.
What do you think about the -64 °F recorded at the Kanuti Lake SCAN station on the 28th?
Is it reliable?

It is possible that some “consecutive days below Xº " will be set somewhere, though even that will be tough.
If I'm understanding the latest AFD, 14:07 AKST today, we're looking at the same kind of upper low scenario next couple of days?
